Through the Humanoid Object project, I have been exploring the question: "Can we perceive machines as sentient beings in our daily lives?" This work contemplates a life coexisting with machines, particularly by expressing their ability to generate visual outputs autonomously. Among the many human behaviors, I focus on doodling—a raw and instinctive form of self-expression. Often spontaneous and seemingly meaningless, doodles reveal emotions and thoughts unconsciously, reflecting the unique personality of the individual. By having a machine (via AI) perform this very human act of doodling, I question whether such behavior allows us to attribute individuality—or even personhood—to machines. The project further delves into the existential boundary between humans and machines by examining the facial expressions the machine draws. Since the AI’s output is based on human-generated doodle and facial expression datasets, I also ask: "Can these creations truly be considered original works of the machine?” The piece <Expression in Expression> is part of the Humanoid Object series, specifically drawn by the machine featured in <Humanoid Object #4>. Over time, the machine develops its own stylistic tendencies and continues to generate new images through those patterns. In this work, AI is used to generate numerous micro-expressions, which are layered on top of one another, ultimately forming a new, composite face. These overlapping expressions suggest a hybrid identity, born not from a single moment but from the accumulation of countless fragments of expression.
지금까지 '휴머노이드 오브젝트 프로젝트'를 통해 "우리는 일상생활 속에서 기계를 인격체로 받아들일 수 있을까?"라는 질문을 던지며, 기계와 함께 살아가는 삶에 대해 고찰해 왔다. 자세히 설명하면 기계가 자율적으로 무언가를 창조하는 모습을 표현하며, 특히 인간의 가장 자연스러운 행동 중 하나인 낙서에 주목한다. 낙서는 은밀한 자기 표현이자 인간의 본능적인 행위로, 무의식 중에 표출된 감정과 사상이 개인의 독특한 스타일로 드러나는 특징을 지닌다. 비록 특정한 의도나 의미 없이 도형, 글자, 문장으로 나타날 수 있지만, 그 속에는 자아가 반영된다. 이 점에서 인간의 전유물로 여겨졌던 낙서를 기계가 스스로(인공지능을 통해) 생성하는 것을 통해, 기계가 인격체로 받아들여질 수 있는 가능성을 탐구한다. 더 나아가, 기계가 그린 얼굴 표정을 통해 인간과 기계의 존재에 대한 근본적인 질문을 던지며, 인공지능에 의해 생성된 낙서의 근원이 인간이 만들어낸 낙서 데이터에서 비롯된다는 점에서 "이것을 과연 기계 고유의 창작물로 볼 수 있을까?"라는 의문을 제기한다.
<표정 속 표정>은 휴머노이드 오브젝트 프로젝트의 일부로서 <휴머노이드 오브젝트 #4> 작품의 기계가 그려낸 드로잉이다. 기계가 자신만의 스타일을 갖게되면서 그 스타일에 따라 새롭게 표현된 낙서를 해나간다. 위의 작품은 AI 기술을 활용하여 수많은 표정을 생성하고 그 수많은 표정들이 겹쳐서 또다른 표정을 만들어 낸다.
